FRIDAY 19 AUGUST 2016
Journey: Triple L Estate – Broomes Island – Triple L Estate
With Matt now free on Friday, we decided to go up to Broomes to enjoy a ‘local’s’ night. Upon starting the engines, however, we again noticed a small puff of smoke from the port engine. No burning smell. Even so, the smoke is a bit disconcerting. Not enough, mind you, to keep us from going out. It seemed to be running fine. Again, we didn’t smell any burning nor did the smoke continue.
We had a beautiful night with fantastic sky full of cloud formations. Such an enchanting ride up river. On the way up the river I heard a VHF Ch. 16 Coast Guard announcement: Pan Pan Pan – a male voice had reported a person in the water. No other details known at this time. Boaters are requested to be on the lookout and assist if necessary. Please report to USCG any findings.
We had a great time at Broomes and saw so many people don’t often run into on a regular basis: G and B; H and B; C and J; S and T; K and B; K and J; and the other usual locals. I enjoyed introducing Matt so that I could show him off … being the proud auntie.
While there, as usual, we watched vessels docking. One guy in a decent sized boat decided to tie up to the inside wall, but at what I called the shallow side. We were all even more surprised he choose that location as we were having a fairly low, low-tide. Especially since there were other open slips with much deeper water. Sure enough, he ended up bottoming out his boat. He tried pulling himself over, but the boat tilted at an angle… not freely floating. Finally Sandy took pity on him and walked over to offer her input on the low tide, shallow water situation of the wall location, and pointed out to the other pier as a deeper water option.
We had a beautiful cruise home with a nearly full moon. Lori captained while Matt and I sat in the bow seats, chatting. Lori went at a comfortable leisurely pace of about 2800 RPM.
